Do you use a mobile phone while driving?

Back to News

Unfortunately, despite it having been illegal for a number of years, it is still common place to see people using their mobile phones while driving.

It is frightening that in the age of technology where mobile phone calls can be made via a cars stereo using Bluetooth that driver are in fact using their mobile phone for much more than just phone calls, with a number updating social media and even taking pictures and making videos!

Under the current law if you are caught using a mobile phone while driving you can expect 3 points on your licence and a fine of up to £100. This could be about to change next year when tougher penalties come into force.

This will see penalties of 6 points on your licence and a fine of £200. Repeat offenders could find themselves off to court with a 6 month driving ban and a fine of £1,000. Newly qualified drivers could find themselves having to retake their test.

The real penalty is when those actions prove to be fatal and there are plenty of incidents which record the reality of what may be deemed to be a harmless action. If you cause a fatal accident while using your mobile phone you can expect a prison sentence for dangerous driving.
